Cue ball

The ball struck directly by a cue in cue sports. Its contact with other balls transfers momentum and determines how play develops.

Cue sport stroke: The controlled movement of a cue to strike a ball in a cue sport. The stroke sets the cue ball's speed, direction, and spin.
Cue: A tapered stick used to strike balls in billiards and related games. It delivers the force that starts the cue ball moving.
Eight-ball: A pool game in which players pocket assigned groups of balls before legally pocketing the eight ball. Players use the cue ball to pocket a chosen group and control the table.
Scratch (pool): A foul in pool in which the cue ball is pocketed or otherwise leaves the playing surface. The cue ball's special role makes pocketing it a foul in many pool games.
Cue ball control: The skill of directing a cue ball to a desired position after a shot. Position play depends on controlling where the cue ball travels after contact.
Object ball: A ball other than the cue ball that a player aims to contact or pocket. The cue ball's immediate target is an object ball.
Nine-ball: A pool game in which players must first contact the lowest-numbered ball remaining. The cue ball's first contact determines whether a shot is legal.
Ball-in-hand: A rule allowing a player to place the cue ball freely, or within a designated area, after a foul. This penalty remedy applies specifically to the cue ball, not object balls.
Cue ball spin: Rotation imparted to a cue ball that changes its motion before or after collision. Spin lets players alter the cue ball's path and rebound behavior.
Cue tip: The small end of a cue that contacts the ball during a shot. Its contact point affects the cue ball's speed and spin.
