Knowra Cult Cult A contested label applied to religious groups, often implying manipulation, coercive control, or social danger. Scholars and authorities may prefer more specific terms because the label has no agreed neutral definition.
New religious movement : A religious community or tradition that emerged relatively recently or outside established religious institutions. This less pejorative scholarly term is often preferred when the label “cult” is disputed.
Coercive control : A pattern of domination that restricts another person’s autonomy through intimidation, isolation, or other controlling behavior. Specific claims of control are more informative than applying the label alone.
Sect : A religious group that separates from, or is classified as a branch of, a larger religious tradition. The term describes a relationship to a religious tradition without necessarily implying danger.
Peoples Temple : A religious and political movement led by Jim Jones that ended in mass deaths at Jonestown in 1978. Its history is frequently cited in public arguments about destructive groups and their leaders.
Stigma : A mark of social disgrace that can lead to stereotyping, exclusion, or unequal treatment. Calling a group a cult can stigmatize both its members and its beliefs.
Undue influence : Persuasion or pressure that overcomes a person’s ability to make an independent decision. It offers a focused framework for examining alleged manipulation in group settings.
Denomination : An organized branch of a religion with its own institutions, identity, and practices. Established denominations illustrate how social acceptance can distinguish groups more than beliefs do.
Heaven's Gate : A new religious movement whose members died by suicide in California in 1997. The case shows how media narratives attach the cult label to a group after catastrophe.
Religious freedom : The right to hold, change, practice, or reject religious beliefs without coercion or discrimination. Disputes over the label often concern whether criticism protects people or restricts minority faiths.
Social isolation : A condition in which a person has limited contact or meaningful connection with other people. Restriction of outside relationships is one alleged means of increasing dependence on a group.
