Cultural assimilation

Cultural assimilation is the process by which individuals or groups adopt another culture’s practices, values, or identity, often reducing or losing aspects of their original culture.

Language shift: The process by which a community gradually replaces its language with another. Adopting a dominant language can ease participation while weakening transmission of an original language.
Multiculturalism: An approach to society that recognizes or supports the coexistence of distinct cultural groups. It favors continued group distinctiveness rather than convergence on one dominant culture.
Americanization: The adoption of United States cultural, political, or economic practices by people or institutions elsewhere. It names a historically influential national form of cultural convergence.
Forced assimilation: The coercive suppression of a group’s culture in order to impose another culture or identity. It shows how assimilation can be enforced through state power rather than chosen.
Assimilation theory: A body of theories explaining how minority groups become incorporated into a larger society. Its competing models disagree about whether incorporation follows a common path or depends on context.
Acculturation: Cultural change resulting from sustained contact between groups, which does not necessarily erase either culture. It distinguishes cultural adaptation through contact from assimilation’s possible loss of distinctiveness.
Cultural pluralism: The coexistence of distinct cultural groups within a shared society while retaining their traditions. It describes a social outcome in which cultural difference persists instead of disappearing.
Melting pot: A metaphor for a society in which groups blend into a shared culture. The metaphor presents assimilation as collective cultural fusion, especially in discussions of immigration.
Residential schools: Institutions that removed Indigenous children from their families, often to suppress Indigenous languages and cultures. They demonstrate the severe consequences of coercive assimilation policies.
Segmented assimilation: A theory that immigrant groups may integrate into different segments of society with varied outcomes. It challenges the assumption that later generations steadily converge on one mainstream culture.
