Cultural materialism

Cultural materialism is an anthropological theory that explains cultural practices through material conditions such as technology, ecology, and production.

Infrastructure–structure–superstructure: A model dividing culture into material production and reproduction, social organization, and symbolic or ideological practices. This layered model is cultural materialism’s central account of how material conditions influence institutions and beliefs.
Marvin Harris: An American anthropologist who developed and named cultural materialism. Harris established the theory’s framework and defended it through comparative ethnographic studies.

Potlatch: A ceremonial feast and gift-giving institution practiced by Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest. Materialist interpretations examine how potlatch practices relate to wealth, status, and regional economies.
Structuralism: An approach that explains cultural forms through underlying systems of relations and oppositions. Structuralism locates explanatory patterns in symbolic structures rather than material infrastructure.
Reductionism: The practice of explaining complex phenomena solely through simpler or more fundamental causes. Critics ask whether cultural materialism can explain symbolic life without reducing it to material interests.
