Culture industry

The culture industry is Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer’s account of mass-produced culture organized by commercial and bureaucratic systems. It argues that standardized entertainment encourages passive consumption and reproduces existing social relations.

Standardization: The production of goods or practices according to uniform patterns. Cultural products repeat formulas, making apparent variety compatible with sameness.
Dialectic of Enlightenment: A 1944 book by Theodor W. Adorno and Max Horkheimer examining how Enlightenment reason can turn into domination. Its chapter on the culture industry introduced the concept's most influential formulation.
Theodor W. Adorno: A German philosopher, sociologist, and composer associated with the Frankfurt School. Adorno developed the culture-industry critique and applied it to music and popular entertainment.

Encoding/decoding model: Stuart Hall's model describing how media messages are produced and interpreted through dominant, negotiated, or oppositional readings. It directly challenges the idea that standardized media determines audience response.
Commercialization: The process of organizing activities or goods around commercial exchange and profit. The concept made commercialization central to debates about cultural production.
