Cumania

Cumania was a medieval Eurasian steppe region dominated by the nomadic Cumans, extending across parts of present-day Ukraine, southern Russia, and neighboring lands.

Cumans: A confederation of Turkic-speaking nomadic peoples who dominated parts of the Eurasian steppe during the Middle Ages. The Cumans’ migrations and political power defined Cumania.
Nomadic pastoralism: A livelihood based on moving livestock seasonally across grazing lands. Seasonal movement let Cumans use Cumania’s extensive grasslands.
Battle of the Kalka River: A 1223 battle in which Mongol forces defeated an alliance of Cumans and Rus' princes. The defeat exposed the vulnerability of Cumania’s alliances to Mongol campaigns.
Cumans in the Byzantine Empire: Cuman groups who served as allies, mercenaries, or settlers within Byzantine political spheres. Some Cumans entered imperial service as steppe power shifted westward.
