Cumans

The Cumans were a confederation of Turkic-speaking nomadic peoples who dominated parts of the Eurasian steppe and southeastern Europe during the Middle Ages.

Kipchaks: A Turkic-speaking people who formed a major medieval confederation across the Eurasian steppe. Cumans and Kipchaks were closely connected peoples, often treated together in medieval sources.
Eurasian nomads: Pastoral peoples who moved seasonally across the grasslands of Eurasia. Cuman political life depended on mobile pastoralism and steppe networks.
Kievan Rus': A medieval polity centered on Kyiv and ruled by a dynasty of princes. Cuman raids and alliances repeatedly shaped the military politics of Rus' principalities.
Köten: A Cuman leader who sought refuge in Hungary during the Mongol advance in the thirteenth century. His negotiations with King Béla IV marked a major episode in Cuman migration to Hungary.
Kunság: A region of Hungary historically associated with communities descended from the Cumans. Its name and local traditions preserve the memory of Cuman settlement in Hungary.
Pontic–Caspian steppe: A vast grassland region stretching from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea. This steppe was the principal homeland and political arena of Cuman groups.
Pastoral nomadism: A subsistence system based on moving livestock between seasonal pastures. Herding and seasonal mobility supported Cuman communities and mounted forces.
Kingdom of Hungary: A medieval Christian kingdom in Central Europe founded around the turn of the first millennium. Hungarian rulers settled Cuman refugees and later integrated Cuman communities into the kingdom.
Béla IV of Hungary: King of Hungary from 1235 to 1270, who rebuilt the kingdom after the Mongol invasion. He admitted Cuman refugees, seeking their military support and settlement in Hungary.
Kumanovo: A city in North Macedonia whose name is traditionally associated with the Cumans. The place-name is one proposed trace of Cuman presence in the Balkans.
