Cushitic languages

Cushitic is a branch of the Afroasiatic language family whose languages are spoken chiefly in the Horn of Africa and neighboring regions.

Afroasiatic languages: A language family spanning much of North Africa, the Horn of Africa, and parts of West Asia. Cushitic is one of its major branches.
Oromo language: A Cushitic language spoken by Oromo communities, especially in Ethiopia and Kenya. Oromo is among the largest Cushitic languages by number of speakers.
Afroasiatic Urheimat: The hypothesized homeland of the ancestral Afroasiatic language and its early speakers. Cushitic's deeper origins depend partly on where Afroasiatic began.
Semitic languages: A major Afroasiatic branch that includes Arabic, Hebrew, and Amharic. Semitic and Cushitic are separate branches within Afroasiatic.
Proto-Cushitic: The reconstructed ancestral language from which the Cushitic languages descended. Comparative evidence in modern Cushitic languages helps reconstruct their common ancestor.
Somali language: A Cushitic language spoken chiefly in Somalia and neighboring parts of the Horn of Africa. Somali is a major national and cross-border language in the family.
Proto-Afroasiatic: The reconstructed ancestral language from which the Afroasiatic branches descended. Proto-Cushitic is considered a descendant of this reconstructed ancestor.
Omotic languages: A group of languages spoken mainly in southwestern Ethiopia, classified by many scholars within Afroasiatic. Its relationship to Cushitic and Afroasiatic classification remains debated.
Comparative method: A method for reconstructing ancestral languages by comparing systematic similarities among related languages. It underpins the reconstruction of Proto-Cushitic and Cushitic subgrouping.
Afar language: A Cushitic language spoken in Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti. Afar shows the family's presence across several states in the Horn.
