Cut Nyak Dhien

Cut Nyak Dhien (c. 1848–1908) was an Acehnese resistance leader who fought Dutch colonial rule during the Aceh War and became an Indonesian national hero.

Teuku Umar: An Acehnese military leader who fought Dutch rule and was Cut Nyak Dhien’s second husband. Their partnership joined military strategy with resistance to Dutch control.
Aceh Sultanate: A Muslim sultanate in northern Sumatra that resisted Dutch expansion before its formal incorporation into the Dutch East Indies. Dhien’s resistance defended a society whose sovereignty the Dutch sought to end.
Guerrilla warfare: Irregular warfare in which smaller forces use mobility, surprise, and local knowledge against a stronger opponent. Acehnese fighters relied on mobility and ambush against Dutch forces with greater resources.
Indonesian National Heroes: An official Indonesian honor recognizing people judged to have made significant contributions to the nation. Dhien’s posthumous recognition placed her resistance within Indonesia’s national history.
Cut Nyak Meutia: An Acehnese resistance leader who fought Dutch forces in the early twentieth century. She carried on armed resistance in Aceh after Cut Nyak Dhien’s capture.
Aceh War: A prolonged conflict between the Dutch colonial state and Acehnese forces, conventionally dated from 1873 to 1904. This was the conflict in which Dhien became a leading resistance figure.

Sultan Muhammad Daud Syah: The last sultan of Aceh, who resisted Dutch rule before surrendering in 1903. His defeat marked the collapse of Aceh’s sultanate during the war she fought.
Acehnese people: An Austronesian people native to Aceh, at the northern end of Sumatra. Her leadership arose from Acehnese society and its opposition to foreign rule.
