Cyclamate

Cyclamate is a synthetic, nonnutritive sweetener consisting of salts of cyclamic acid. It supplies sweetness with little or no energy and is used as a sugar substitute in foods and beverages.

Cyclamic acid: An organic sulfonic acid whose salts are used as the sweetener cyclamate. Its salts, rather than the free acid, make up commercial cyclamate.
Michael Sveda: An American chemist who discovered cyclamate in 1937 while working at the University of Illinois. His discovery brought cyclamate into development as a sweetener.
Tabletop sweetener: A sweetening product intended to be added directly to food or drink by consumers. Cyclamate is sold this way in countries where its use is permitted.
Aspartame: A low-calorie artificial sweetener made from two amino acids. It is a chemically distinct alternative with different stability and use characteristics.
Cyclamate carcinogenicity studies: Laboratory studies that investigated whether cyclamate or its metabolites can cause cancer. Early animal findings prompted the U.S. ban, while later assessments reconsidered their relevance.
Sodium cyclamate: The sodium salt of cyclamic acid, used as a nonnutritive sweetener. It is a widely used form of cyclamate.

Sugar substitute: A substance used in place of sugar to sweeten foods or drinks. Cyclamate serves this role in products that need sweetness without ordinary sugar.
Sucralose: A high-intensity sweetener produced by chemically modifying sucrose. Unlike cyclamate, it is a chlorinated sugar derivative.
Carcinogen: An agent capable of causing cancer under particular conditions of exposure. Cyclamate’s safety debate centers on whether experimental findings establish such a hazard in humans.
