Cyclobutadiene

Cyclobutadiene is a four-carbon cyclic conjugated hydrocarbon with four π electrons. Its planar form is antiaromatic and strongly destabilized, so the molecule distorts and readily reacts.

Antiaromaticity: Antiaromaticity is the destabilization of a planar, cyclic, conjugated molecule with 4n π electrons. Cyclobutadiene is the classic four-π-electron case, avoiding the instability expected for aromatic rings.

Hückel's rule: Hückel's rule predicts aromatic stabilization for planar, cyclic, conjugated systems with 4n + 2 π electrons. Its electron-count rule predicts why cyclobutadiene’s four π electrons do not confer aromatic stabilization.
Alberto F. Voigt: Alberto F. Voigt was a chemist whose work included the preparation of cyclobutadiene derivatives. Voigt and co-workers reported a cyclobutadiene derivative that helped spur debate about the parent molecule.
