Cyclohexanol

Cyclohexanol is a colorless organic compound with formula C₆H₁₂O, consisting of a hydroxyl group attached to a cyclohexane ring.

Cyclohexane: A saturated six-carbon ring whose chair conformations interconvert through ring flipping. Cyclohexanol retains this ring, whose chair shape places the hydroxyl group in axial or equatorial positions.
Cyclohexanone: A cyclic ketone with formula C₆H₁₀O, used chiefly as an intermediate in nylon manufacture. It is the oxidation product of cyclohexanol and a companion intermediate in nylon production.
Alcohol (chemistry): An organic compound containing a hydroxyl group bonded to a saturated carbon atom. Cyclohexanol belongs to this family because its hydroxyl group is attached to a saturated ring carbon.
Cyclohexene: An unsaturated six-membered carbon ring containing one carbon–carbon double bond. Dehydration can form cyclohexene, which lacks cyclohexanol's oxygen-containing hydroxyl group.
Chair conformation: The most stable puckered conformation of cyclohexane, with alternating carbon atoms above and below the ring plane. Cyclohexanol usually adopts a chair form that reduces ring strain.
Adipic acid: A six-carbon dicarboxylic acid used mainly to manufacture nylon 6,6. Cyclohexanol can be oxidized in industrial routes that produce adipic acid.
Hydroxyl group: An oxygen–hydrogen functional group written as –OH. This group defines cyclohexanol's alcohol character and its hydrogen-bonding behavior.
Phenol: An aromatic compound with a hydroxyl group bonded directly to a benzene ring. Unlike cyclohexanol, phenol has an aromatic ring and a hydroxyl group attached directly to it.
Axial and equatorial bonds: The two orientations of substituent bonds on a cyclohexane chair, parallel or roughly perpendicular to its ring axis. A ring flip exchanges the hydroxyl group's axial and equatorial orientations.
Caprolactam: A cyclic amide used as the monomer for nylon 6. Cyclohexanol-derived cyclohexanone can enter industrial routes to this nylon monomer.
