Cyclohexene

Cyclohexene is a six-carbon cyclic alkene with one carbon–carbon double bond and molecular formula C₆H₁₀. Its unsaturation makes it more reactive than cyclohexane.

Electrophilic addition: A reaction in which an electrophile and a nucleophile add across a carbon–carbon multiple bond. The double bond of cyclohexene undergoes additions such as halogenation and hydration.
Alkene: A hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon–carbon double bond. Cyclohexene is a cyclic member of this broader class.
Cyclohexanol dehydration: An acid-catalyzed elimination reaction that converts cyclohexanol into cyclohexene and water. This preparation is a standard route from a readily available alcohol to cyclohexene.
Cyclohexadiene: A six-carbon cyclic hydrocarbon containing two carbon–carbon double bonds. It has a second alkene bond, changing both formula and reaction possibilities.
Hydrogenation: The addition of hydrogen to unsaturated compounds, commonly using a metal catalyst. Hydrogenation converts cyclohexene into cyclohexane by saturating its double bond.
Cycloalkene: A cyclic hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon–carbon double bond. This class places cyclohexene among unsaturated rings of different sizes.
Cyclohexene hydration: The addition of water across cyclohexene’s double bond to form cyclohexanol. Hydration reverses the alcohol-dehydration transformation under suitable conditions.
Cyclopentene: A five-carbon cyclic alkene with one carbon–carbon double bond. Its smaller ring provides a close comparison for ring size and alkene reactivity.
Epoxidation: The conversion of an alkene into an epoxide by transfer of an oxygen atom. Oxidants such as peracids transform cyclohexene into cyclohexene oxide.
Carbon–carbon double bond: A covalent bond consisting of one sigma bond and one pi bond between two carbon atoms. This bond is the defining reactive feature of cyclohexene.
