Cyclopentadiene

Cyclopentadiene is a cyclic hydrocarbon with formula C₅H₆. Its conjugated diene reacts readily in cycloadditions, and removing a proton forms the aromatic cyclopentadienyl anion.

Cyclopentadienyl anion: The aromatic C₅H₅⁻ ion formed by deprotonating cyclopentadiene. Removing a ring proton creates the aromatic ligand central to many metal complexes.
Conjugated system: A sequence of adjacent atoms with overlapping orbitals that allows electrons to be delocalized. Its two conjugated double bonds make cyclopentadiene capable of cycloaddition.
Norbornene: A bridged bicyclic alkene with formula C₇H₁₀, commonly made by cycloaddition of cyclopentadiene and ethylene. It is a simple product of cyclopentadiene’s Diels–Alder reaction with ethylene.
Johannes Thiele: A German chemist known for work on unsaturated compounds and the partial valence theory of conjugation. His work on conjugated systems helped establish the chemical framework for understanding the diene.
Cyclopentadienyl radical: The C₅H₅ radical, formed by removing a hydrogen atom from cyclopentadiene. It is a distinct reactive species produced by homolytic C–H bond cleavage.
Alkene: A hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon–carbon double bond. Cyclopentadiene contains two alkene units joined in a conjugated ring.
Dicyclopentadiene: A dimer of cyclopentadiene formed by a Diels–Alder reaction. This readily formed dimer is also an industrial feedstock that can be cracked back to cyclopentadiene.
Diels–Alder reaction: A concerted cycloaddition between a conjugated diene and a dienophile that forms a six-membered ring. Otto Diels and Kurt Alder’s named reaction made cyclopentadiene a classic diene substrate.
Cyclopentadienyl cation: The C₅H₅⁺ ion, a four-π-electron ring species that is antiaromatic when planar. Its unfavorable electronic structure contrasts with the aromatic anion formed by deprotonation.
Cyclopentane: A saturated five-membered carbon ring with formula C₅H₁₀. It shares the ring framework but lacks cyclopentadiene’s double bonds and diene reactivity.
