Cyclopropene

Cyclopropene is a three-carbon ring containing one carbon–carbon double bond, with molecular formula C₃H₄. Its highly strained ring makes it reactive and gives it unusual bonding.

Cyclopropane: Cyclopropane is a three-carbon ring with only single bonds and molecular formula C₃H₆. Replacing one ring bond with a double bond creates cyclopropene’s distinctive strain and reactivity.
Alkene: An unsaturated hydrocarbon containing a carbon–carbon double bond. Cyclopropene is the smallest cyclic member of this broad family.
Strain-promoted alkyne–nitrone cycloaddition: A bioorthogonal reaction in which a strained alkyne reacts with a nitrone to form an isoxazoline. It provides a related strain-driven labeling strategy, though cyclopropenes are smaller unsaturated rings.
August Freund: An Austrian chemist known for early work on cyclopropane and small-ring compounds. His research helped establish the chemistry of highly strained three-membered carbon rings.
