Knowra Cyclothymic disorder Cyclothymic disorder Cyclothymic disorder is a chronic pattern of hypomanic and depressive symptoms that do not meet full criteria for manic, hypomanic, or major depressive episodes.
Hypomania : A sustained period of elevated or irritable mood and increased activity that is less severe than mania. Hypomanic symptoms form one pole of cyclothymic mood fluctuations without reaching full episode criteria.
Bipolar II disorder : A mood disorder defined by at least one hypomanic episode and one major depressive episode, with no history of mania. Unlike cyclothymia, bipolar II includes full hypomanic and major depressive episodes.
Psychotherapy : The treatment of mental health conditions through structured psychological methods and therapeutic relationships. Therapy can help manage mood patterns, stress, and relationship effects in cyclothymia.
Functional impairment : Difficulty carrying out work, social, educational, or daily activities because of a health condition. Subthreshold symptoms can still disrupt relationships, work, and everyday responsibilities.
Subthreshold depression : Depressive symptoms that cause distress or impairment but fall short of criteria for a major depressive episode. Cyclothymic depressive periods remain below the threshold for major depressive episodes.
Bipolar I disorder : A mood disorder defined by at least one manic episode, with or without depressive episodes. A manic episode places the diagnosis in bipolar I rather than cyclothymic disorder.
Cognitive behavioral therapy : A structured psychotherapy that examines links among thoughts, feelings, and behavior and develops practical coping strategies. It can support routines and coping skills for recurring changes in mood and energy.
Suicidal ideation : Thoughts about suicide, ranging from wishing to die to planning an attempt. Depressive symptoms warrant attention to suicide risk even when episode criteria are unmet.
Mood episode : A sustained period of mood and activity changes that meets diagnostic criteria for a defined mood state. Cyclothymia involves mood symptoms that persist without forming full mood episodes.
Major depressive disorder : A disorder involving one or more major depressive episodes and no history of mania or hypomania. Cyclothymia includes elevated-mood symptoms, while major depressive disorder does not.
