Cyclotron radiation

Cyclotron radiation is electromagnetic radiation emitted by a charged particle gyrating around magnetic field lines. Its frequency and polarization reflect the particle’s motion and the magnetic-field strength.

Cyclotron frequency: The orbital frequency of a nonrelativistic charged particle in a uniform magnetic field. It sets the fundamental frequency of radiation from a gyrating particle.
Lorentz force: The force on an electrically charged particle due to electric and magnetic fields. Its magnetic component bends particle motion into the orbit that produces cyclotron radiation.
Electron cyclotron maser: A coherent radio-emission mechanism driven by unstable electron distributions in a magnetic field. It amplifies emission near cyclotron frequencies in planetary and stellar magnetospheres.
Bremsstrahlung: Radiation emitted when a charged particle is accelerated by another particle’s electric field. Unlike cyclotron emission, it arises chiefly from encounters rather than magnetic gyration.
Larmor formula: A classical equation giving the power radiated by an accelerating nonrelativistic point charge. It quantifies the power emitted as magnetic forces continually accelerate the particle.
Charged particle: A particle with a nonzero electric charge that responds to electromagnetic fields. Cyclotron radiation requires a moving charge whose trajectory is curved by a magnetic field.
Jupiter decametric radiation: Strong decameter-wavelength radio emission generated in Jupiter’s magnetosphere. Its bursts are a prominent planetary example of cyclotron-maser emission.
Curvature radiation: Radiation from charged particles moving along curved paths, especially along curved magnetic-field lines. It can occur without the particle spiraling across magnetic-field lines.
Synchrotron radiation: Radiation emitted by relativistic charged particles accelerated transversely, strongly concentrated along their direction of motion. At relativistic energies, cyclotron emission becomes the beamed, broadband synchrotron regime.
Magnetic field: A vector field describing magnetic influence on moving charges, currents, and magnetic materials. Its strength determines the particle’s gyration frequency and the radiation’s characteristic scale.
