Cyrus McCormick

Cyrus McCormick (1809–1884) was an American inventor and industrialist who developed and commercialized a mechanical reaper that transformed grain harvesting.

Mechanical reaper: A horse-drawn machine that cuts standing grain and gathers it for harvest. McCormick’s best-known invention mechanized cutting grain in the field.
Robert McCormick: A Virginia farmer and inventor whose experiments with harvesting machinery preceded his son’s successful reaper. Cyrus developed the harvesting-machine project begun by his father.
Jo Anderson: An enslaved Black man who worked with Cyrus McCormick on early reaper development and field demonstrations. Accounts credit Anderson with practical contributions to testing and refining the machine.
Agricultural Revolution: A broad transformation of farming through changes in technology, production, and land use. The reaper contributed to agricultural change by sharply increasing harvesting capacity.
