Cytoplasmic streaming

Cytoplasmic streaming is the directed flow of cytoplasm within a cell, often carrying organelles and other materials along. It is especially visible in large plant cells.

Actin: Actin is a protein that polymerizes into filaments forming part of the cytoskeleton. Actin filaments provide tracks and force-bearing structures for streaming.
Chara: Chara is a genus of large green algae with complex, plantlike cellular organization. Its internodal cells show rapid, easily observed cytoplasmic streaming.
Intracellular transport: Intracellular transport is the movement of molecules and structures within a cell. Cytoplasmic flow is one way cells redistribute material internally.
Brownian motion: Brownian motion is the random movement of particles suspended in a fluid, caused by molecular collisions. Unlike directed streaming, it produces no coordinated bulk flow.

Nitella: Nitella is a genus of freshwater green algae with elongated cells. Its large cells have long been used to study streaming and intracellular transport.
Cytoplasmic organization: Cytoplasmic organization is the spatial arrangement of molecules and structures within a cell's cytoplasm. Streaming can shape where organelles and other components accumulate.
Cytoplasmic circulation: Cytoplasmic circulation is the organized circulation of cytoplasm within a cell. The terms often describe the visible, circulating patterns of streaming.
Cytoskeleton: The cytoskeleton is a network of protein filaments that supports cell structure and movement. Streaming is one form of movement organized by this cellular framework.
Elodea: Elodea is a genus of aquatic plants commonly used in microscopy demonstrations. Chloroplast motion in its leaf cells can make streaming visible.
