Czech Silesia

Czech Silesia is the easternmost part of Silesia, within the Czech Republic. It includes territory around Opava and Ostrava and much of former Austrian Silesia.

Duchy of Silesia: A medieval and early modern polity whose lands formed much of the historical region of Silesia. Czech Silesia developed within the patchwork of duchies that once made up Silesia.
Silesia: A historical region of Central Europe, now divided mainly among Poland, Czechia, and Germany. Czech Silesia is the portion of this wider historical region inside Czechia.
Maria Theresa: Habsburg ruler from 1740 to 1780 who defended her monarchy during the Silesian Wars. Her reign saw the Habsburg monarchy retain the territory later known as Austrian Silesia.
Ostrava-Karviná Coal Basin: A major coal-producing basin in northeastern Czechia, extending around Ostrava and Karviná. Its coal deposits drove the region’s industrial growth from the nineteenth century onward.
Zaolzie: A territory west of the Olza River, historically disputed between Poland and Czechoslovakia and now within Czechia. Its contested status affected the region’s borderlands and Polish-Czech relations.
Duchy of Opava: A Silesian duchy centered on Opava, established in the fourteenth century under the Přemyslid dynasty. Its territory formed a major historical core of the Czech side of Silesia.
Moravia: A historical region in the eastern Czech lands, lying mainly west of Czech Silesia. Its neighboring territory is often distinguished from Silesia in Czech regional geography.
Frederick the Great: King of Prussia from 1740 to 1786 who conquered most of Silesia from the Habsburg monarchy. His victories separated the region’s Habsburg-held lands from Prussian Silesia.
Třinec Iron and Steel Works: A steelworks in Třinec, founded in the nineteenth century and now part of the region’s industrial landscape. It illustrates the iron and steel production that developed around Silesian coal.
Munich Agreement: The 1938 agreement that allowed Nazi Germany to annex Czechoslovakia’s Sudeten borderlands. Its territorial upheaval altered political control across the Czech border regions, including Silesian areas.
