Dacia

Dacia was an ancient region north of the lower Danube, encompassing much of present-day Romania and parts of neighboring countries. Its boundaries and political control shifted over time.

Dacians: An ancient people of the lower Danube region, closely related to the Getae. They inhabited Dacia and shaped its political and cultural history.
Burebista: A first-century BCE king who united a large Dacian realm in southeastern Europe. His reign marks an early high point of political unity in Dacia.
Sarmizegetusa Regia: The principal political and religious center of the Dacian kingdom in the Orăștie Mountains. Its remains reveal the kingdom’s capital before the Roman conquest.
Romanization: The spread of Roman language, institutions, and cultural practices among provincial populations. Roman rule transformed parts of Dacia, though the scale and legacy remain debated.

Decebalus: The Dacian king who fought two major wars against Emperor Trajan before his kingdom’s defeat. His rule ended with Rome’s conquest of central Dacia.
Dacian fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains: A group of hilltop fortifications built by the Dacians in the Orăștie Mountains. Their design and placement show how the kingdom defended its core.
Dacia Ripensis: A late Roman province established south of the Danube in the fourth century CE. Its name reflects the later use of Dacia for territory beyond the original province.
Thrace: An ancient region in southeastern Europe, south of the lower Danube and west of the Black Sea. Thrace lay south of Dacia and had a distinct history under Roman rule.
