Dafydd ap Llywelyn

Dafydd ap Llywelyn was ruler of Gwynedd from 1240 until his death in 1246. Son of Llywelyn the Great, he was the first Welsh ruler to use the title Prince of Wales.

Llywelyn the Great: A ruler of Gwynedd who expanded his authority across much of Wales and ruled from the late twelfth century until 1240. Dafydd inherited Gwynedd from his father, whose authority he sought to preserve.
Treaty of Woodstock: A 1244 agreement between Dafydd ap Llywelyn and Henry III that addressed their dispute over English claims to Wales. It records the negotiated terms of Dafydd’s conflict with the English crown.
Llywelyn ap Gruffudd: A ruler of Gwynedd who later became the leading Welsh prince and resisted English conquest. Dafydd’s death without a direct heir eventually left the principality to his nephew.
Primogeniture: A succession rule that gives priority to the eldest child, usually the eldest son. Dafydd’s accession depended on his father’s choice and political struggle, not simple eldest-son inheritance.
Joan, Lady of Wales: A daughter of King John of England and wife of Llywelyn the Great, who mediated between Welsh and English rulers. As Dafydd’s mother, she connected his dynasty to the English royal family.
Henry III of England: King of England from 1216 to 1272, whose reign included repeated conflict with Welsh rulers. Dafydd challenged Henry III’s authority and negotiated directly with him.
Conquest of Wales by Edward I: The campaigns and political measures by which Edward I brought Wales under English rule in the late thirteenth century. Dafydd’s defense of Gwynedd preceded the later conquest of the principality.
Gruffydd ap Llywelyn: An eleventh-century Welsh king who briefly united much of Wales under his rule. This earlier ruler shared a name with Dafydd’s half-brother but belonged to a different dynasty and era.
Gruffydd ap Llywelyn Fawr: An elder son of Llywelyn the Great whose imprisonment and death helped clear the way for Dafydd’s succession. His half-brother’s exclusion from the succession strengthened Dafydd’s claim.
Welsh Marches: The borderlands between England and Wales, governed in the Middle Ages by powerful marcher lords. Pressure on the Marches was one way Welsh rulers contested English power.
