Knowra Dagestan Dagestan Dagestan is a republic in southwestern Russia on the western shore of the Caspian Sea. Its mountainous terrain and long history of migration and empire have produced exceptional linguistic and ethnic diversity.
North Caucasus : The northern part of the Caucasus, including several Russian republics and territories between the Black and Caspian seas. Dagestan is the easternmost North Caucasian republic, bordering the Caspian Sea.
Derbent : A city on the Caspian coast of Dagestan, known for its ancient fortifications and strategic position between sea and mountains. Its fortified passageway made Derbent a major gateway between the Eurasian steppe and the Middle East.
Imam Shamil : A nineteenth-century Avar religious and military leader who headed resistance to Russian expansion in the North Caucasus. Shamil’s Imamate united much of highland Dagestan during the Caucasian War.
Makhachkala : The capital and largest city of Dagestan, located on the Caspian coast. Makhachkala concentrates the republic’s administration, transport, and coastal commerce.
Chechnya : A republic of Russia in the North Caucasus, west of Dagestan, with a predominantly Chechen population. Chechnya shares a border and regional history with Dagestan but has a more ethnically concentrated population.
Caucasus Mountains : A mountain system between the Black and Caspian seas, spanning parts of Russia, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. The mountains divide Dagestan into rugged highlands and a more accessible coastal lowland.
Caucasian Albania : An ancient kingdom in the eastern Caucasus, centered largely in present-day Azerbaijan and parts of southern Dagestan. Its territory and Christian communities extended into areas that later became part of Dagestan.
Khadzhimurad : An Avar commander who fought in the Caucasian War and later served the Russian Empire. His shifting allegiance illustrates the competing loyalties within the resistance to Russian rule.
Languages of Dagestan : The languages spoken in Dagestan, including Indigenous Caucasian languages as well as Russian and Turkic languages. The republic’s many languages shape education, broadcasting, and communication across communities.
Ingushetia : A small Russian republic in the North Caucasus, west of Chechnya and east of North Ossetia. Its much smaller area and predominantly Ingush population contrast with Dagestan’s scale and diversity.
