Daisaku Ikeda

Daisaku Ikeda (1928–2023) was a Japanese Buddhist philosopher, author, and educator who led Soka Gakkai and founded Soka Gakkai International (SGI).

Josei Toda: Josei Toda (1900–1958) was a Japanese educator and Buddhist leader who served as Soka Gakkai’s second president. Toda mentored Ikeda and shaped the organization Ikeda later led.
Soka Gakkai: Soka Gakkai is a Japanese lay Buddhist organization whose members practice a tradition based on Nichiren Buddhism. Ikeda joined Soka Gakkai in 1947 and became its third president.
Nichiren: Nichiren (1222–1282) was a Japanese Buddhist monk who taught devotion to the Lotus Sutra as the path to Buddhahood. Ikeda’s religious tradition takes its name and central teachings from Nichiren.
Soka University: Soka University is a private university in Tokyo established in 1971 and founded on value-creating education. Ikeda founded the university as an institutional expression of his educational commitments.
Buddhist humanism: Buddhist humanism is an ethical outlook that emphasizes human dignity, compassion, and the capacity for inner transformation. Ikeda used this outlook to connect Buddhist practice with education and peacebuilding.
Tsunesaburo Makiguchi: Tsunesaburo Makiguchi (1871–1944) was a Japanese educator and founder of the educational philosophy called value-creating pedagogy. Makiguchi founded the movement whose leadership passed through Toda to Ikeda.
Nichiren Buddhism: Nichiren Buddhism is a Japanese Buddhist tradition centered on the Lotus Sutra and the teachings of the medieval monk Nichiren. Its teachings and practices provide the religious foundation of Ikeda’s movement.
Lotus Sutra: The Lotus Sutra is a Mahayana Buddhist scripture that teaches the universal potential for Buddhahood. It is the central scripture in the Nichiren Buddhist practice promoted by Ikeda.
Soka University of America: Soka University of America is a private liberal arts university in California founded by Soka Gakkai International. Its founding extended Ikeda’s educational project to the United States.
Interfaith dialogue: Interfaith dialogue is sustained exchange among people or communities from different religious traditions. Ikeda’s dialogues treated religious exchange as a means of mutual understanding and peace.
