Dall sheep

Dall sheep are wild sheep native to northwestern North America. Adult males, called rams, are known for large, curved horns; their coats are usually white.

Bighorn sheep: A North American wild sheep with a brown coat and large horns, found mainly in western mountain ranges. Its darker coat and overlapping range distinguish it from Dall sheep.
Ram (sheep): An adult male sheep, wild or domestic. Rams are the sex with the massive horns most associated with Dall sheep.
Wildlife management: The practice of conserving and managing wild animal populations and their habitats. Dall sheep harvests and habitat decisions are made through wildlife management.
Stone sheep: A dark-coated form of thinhorn sheep native to parts of British Columbia and the Yukon. Stone sheep are Dall sheep’s closest recognized counterpart within thinhorn sheep.
Climate change in the Arctic: Long-term shifts in temperature and climate patterns across the Arctic region. Changing snow and vegetation conditions may alter Dall sheep survival and forage access.
Thinhorn sheep: A group of northern wild sheep that includes Dall sheep and Stone sheep. Dall sheep are one of the two recognized forms of thinhorn sheep.
Ewe: An adult female sheep. Ewes have shorter, slimmer horns and lead much of the seasonal care of lambs.
Aerial survey: A method of counting or observing wildlife from an aircraft. Biologists use aircraft to survey Dall sheep across remote, rugged ranges.
Fannin sheep: A variably colored thinhorn sheep found in parts of the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Its intermediate coat coloration has made its taxonomic status a subject of debate.
Parasite: An organism that lives on or in a host and obtains resources at the host’s expense. Parasites can affect sheep health, though impacts vary among populations and conditions.
