Dalmatia

Dalmatia was a Roman province on the eastern Adriatic coast, organized from territories conquered in the western Balkans. Its borders and administrative status changed over time.

Illyrian Wars: A series of Roman conflicts in the third and second centuries BCE that established Roman influence across parts of Illyria. These wars began Rome’s expansion into the region later incorporated into Dalmatia.
Roman provincial government: The system through which Roman magistrates and officials administered territories outside Italy. Dalmatia’s governors exercised authority within this broader administrative system.
Narona: A Roman city in the Neretva valley that became an important urban center in Dalmatia. Narona illustrates the growth of Roman civic life beyond the provincial capital.
Pannonia: A Roman province in the central Danube basin, north of Dalmatia. Its neighboring territory became closely linked with Dalmatia in later administrative divisions.
Roman conquest of Illyria: The Roman campaigns that brought Illyrian territories under Roman rule between the third and first centuries BCE. Conquest supplied the territories from which the province was organized.
Legatus Augusti pro praetore: A senatorial governor appointed by the emperor to administer an imperial province and command its forces. This governor’s office directed Dalmatia’s civil administration and military command.
Burnum: A Roman military settlement and legionary camp in the interior of Dalmatia. Its remains document the army’s presence in the province’s inland districts.
Diocletian: Roman emperor from 284 to 305 CE, born in the province of Dalmatia. His rise brought imperial attention to his home province and its Adriatic coast.
Illyria: An ancient region of the western Balkans inhabited by peoples whom Greek and Roman sources called Illyrians. Dalmatia formed part of the wider Roman-held region associated with Illyria.
Roman army: The military organization of ancient Rome, including its legions, auxiliaries, and support services. Army units secured the province and supported Roman control after the revolt.
