Dance notation

Dance notation is a system for recording movement through symbols, words, diagrams, or other written forms. It can preserve choreography, movement details, and relationships between dancers.

Choreography: Choreography is the composition and arrangement of movements in dance. Dance notation records choreography so its movement sequences can be revisited.
Dance reconstruction: Dance reconstruction is the process of recreating a dance from surviving records and evidence. Notation can supply movement details for reviving dances no longer performed.
Raoul-Auger Feuillet: Raoul-Auger Feuillet was a French dance notation theorist whose 1700 book described a system for recording baroque dance. His publications helped establish a widely circulated early notation tradition.
Dance notation systems: Dance notation systems are formal methods for representing movement in written or graphic form. Individual systems differ in symbols, detail, and intended use.
Dance movement: Dance movement is bodily action organized or performed as dance. Notations encode movement qualities and actions rather than merely naming dances.
Dance archive: A dance archive collects and preserves records of dance, including notation, video, and production materials. Notation gives archives a durable record beyond visual recordings.
Choregraphie (Feuillet notation): Choregraphie is the early eighteenth-century notation system described by Raoul-Auger Feuillet for recording social dances. Its floor patterns and step signs record dances in a distinctive period style.
Dance improvisation: Dance improvisation is the creation of movement in the moment, often within agreed constraints. Improvisation can resist fixed recording even when its structures are notated.
Dance notation symbols: Dance notation symbols are graphic marks assigned meanings within a movement-recording system. Symbols are the visual vocabulary through which many systems describe movement.
Choreographic copyright: Choreographic copyright is legal protection for original choreographic works under applicable copyright law. A notation may help document a choreography, though it does not itself establish copyright.
