Daniel arap Moi

Daniel arap Moi was Kenya’s president from 1978 to 2002, succeeding Jomo Kenyatta. His rule combined centralized executive power, one-party politics, patronage, and episodes of political repression.

KANU: The Kenya African National Union was the political party that governed Kenya from independence until 2002. Moi led KANU as it became the vehicle of his one-party rule.
One-party state: A political system in which one party holds a legally dominant or exclusive position in government. Kenya formally became a one-party state under Moi in 1982.
Jomo Kenyatta: Kenya’s first president, who led the country from independence in 1963 until his death in 1978. Moi served as Kenyatta’s vice president and succeeded him after his death.

Presidential system: A system of government with an elected president who serves as head of state and usually head of government. Kenya’s powerful presidency gave Moi extensive control over the executive branch.
