Daniel Bovet

Daniel Bovet (1907–1992) was a Swiss-born Italian pharmacologist whose research on synthetic drugs that block bodily substances earned the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Antihistamine: A drug that blocks histamine receptors or otherwise reduces histamine’s effects. Bovet’s work on synthetic antihistamines helped make these drugs a major treatment class.
Histamine: A signaling molecule involved in immune responses, stomach acid secretion, and neurotransmission. Blocking histamine’s actions was central to Bovet’s work on antiallergic drugs.
Pasteur Institute: A Paris-based biomedical research institute founded by Louis Pasteur in 1887. Bovet conducted much of his early drug research at this institute.
Federico Nitti: An Italian physician and pharmacologist who collaborated with Daniel Bovet at the Pasteur Institute. Nitti worked with Bovet on research into sulfonamides and other synthetic compounds.
Mepyramine: A first-generation antihistamine that blocks histamine H1 receptors. Bovet and his collaborators studied this synthetic compound as an antihistamine.
Histamine H1 receptor: A G protein-coupled receptor that mediates many effects of histamine, including itching and increased vascular permeability. Bovet’s antihistamine research helped establish the value of blocking histamine’s bodily effects.

Ernest Fourneau: A French chemist and pharmacologist who led medicinal chemistry research at the Pasteur Institute. Fourneau directed the laboratory where Bovet began studying synthetic therapeutic compounds.
Anne-Marie Staub: A French immunologist and pharmacologist known for research on antihistamines at the Pasteur Institute. Staub’s antihistamine research was closely connected to Bovet’s investigations of histamine-blocking drugs.
Gallamine triethiodide: A synthetic nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocker used historically during surgery. It exemplifies the synthetic muscle-relaxing agents connected to Bovet’s research.
