Daniel Dennett

Daniel Dennett (1942–2024) was an American philosopher and cognitive scientist whose work explained minds, consciousness, and free will through naturalistic accounts grounded in evolution and computation.

Intentional stance: A strategy for predicting a system by treating it as if it had beliefs and desires aimed at goals. Dennett made this interpretive strategy a central tool for explaining minds and intelligent behavior.
Homunculus argument: A critique of explanations that assign mental tasks to an inner agent, prompting the same task to need another explanation. Dennett’s accounts avoid explaining the mind by placing a smaller interpreter inside it.
Consciousness Explained: Daniel Dennett’s 1991 book presenting the multiple drafts model and a scientific account of consciousness. This book gives his most sustained account of why consciousness has no central theater.
