Daniel Inouye

Daniel Ken Inouye (1924–2012) was a Japanese American World War II veteran and Democratic politician who represented Hawaii in the U.S. Senate from 1963 until his death.

Hirono Mazie: Mazie Hirono is a Japanese American politician who has represented Hawaii in the U.S. Senate since 2013. She succeeded Inouye as one of Hawaii’s Democratic senators.
442nd Infantry Regiment: The 442nd Infantry Regiment was a U.S. Army unit composed largely of Japanese American soldiers during World War II. Inouye served with this segregated unit in the European theater.
Medal of Honor: The Medal of Honor is the United States’ highest military decoration for valor in combat. Inouye received it posthumously in 2000 for his World War II actions.
Japanese American incarceration: Japanese American incarceration was the forced removal and confinement of people of Japanese ancestry in the United States during World War II. Inouye’s family remained in Hawaii, while many Japanese Americans on the mainland were incarcerated.
Daniel Akaka: Daniel Akaka was a Hawaii politician who served in the U.S. Senate from 1990 to 2013. He served alongside Inouye as Hawaii’s other senator for more than two decades.
