Daniel of Galicia

Daniel Romanovich (c. 1201–1264) was a ruler of Galicia–Volhynia who united much of western Rusʹ and was crowned king of Ruthenia in 1253.

Roman Mstislavich: A prince of Galicia and Volhynia who united the two principalities around the turn of the 13th century. Daniel inherited his claim to Galicia–Volhynia from his father, whose earlier union he sought to restore.
Battle of Yaroslav (1245): A 1245 battle in which Daniel’s forces defeated a coalition of rival claimants and Hungarian and Polish allies. The victory secured Daniel’s control of Galicia–Volhynia.
Vasilko Romanovich: Daniel’s younger brother, who ruled Volhynia while Daniel governed Galicia and pursued wider political aims. Their division of responsibilities helped sustain the brothers’ rule over Galicia–Volhynia.
Kingdom of Ruthenia: A medieval kingdom associated with Galicia–Volhynia and the title adopted by Daniel after his 1253 coronation. The title marked Daniel’s elevation as king, though it did not end Mongol overlordship.
Galicia–Volhynia: A medieval principality in western Rusʹ, centered on Galicia and Volhynia. It was Daniel’s dynastic base and the realm he consolidated.

Rurik dynasty: A dynasty of princes traditionally traced to Rurik that ruled many lands of medieval Rusʹ. Daniel’s authority rested on his place in the ruling dynasty of Rusʹ.
Golden Horde: A Mongol khanate that governed much of the western Eurasian steppe and dominated Rusʹ principalities. Daniel had to acknowledge the Horde’s authority while seeking room to rule independently.
