Danube Delta

The Danube Delta is a large wetland in Romania and Ukraine where the Danube River divides into distributaries before entering the Black Sea. Its shifting channels, lakes, reed beds, and coastal lagoons support exceptionally rich wildlife.

Danube: The Danube is Europe’s second-longest river, flowing through or along ten countries before reaching the Black Sea. Its lower reaches supply the water and sediment that build the delta.
Delta lobe: A delta lobe is a protruding part of a delta built by a river distributary’s sediment deposits. Distinct lobes record how Danube channels have shifted their sediment outlets.
Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve: The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve is a protected area in Romania established to conserve the delta’s ecosystems and cultural landscapes. It provides the principal framework for conservation and regulated use of the Romanian delta.
Ramsar Convention: The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty for conserving wetlands and promoting their wise use. The Danube Delta is designated under the treaty as a wetland of international importance.

Alluvial fan: An alluvial fan is a fan-shaped sediment deposit formed where a stream leaves a steep valley for flatter ground. Unlike an alluvial fan, the Danube Delta accumulates sediment at a river’s coastal mouth.
Biosphere reserve: A biosphere reserve is a designated area combining biodiversity conservation with research, education, and sustainable use. The delta’s reserve applies this model across natural and inhabited landscapes.
World Heritage Site: A World Heritage Site is a place recognized by UNESCO for outstanding cultural or natural value. The delta’s Romanian protected area received UNESCO World Heritage recognition for its natural values.
Sulina Branch: The Sulina Branch is a navigable distributary of the Danube that reaches the Black Sea at Sulina. Its engineering and navigation history show how shipping has reshaped a natural channel.
