Daoguang Emperor

The eighth Qing emperor, Daoguang ruled China from 1820 to 1850. His reign saw the First Opium War and the Qing dynasty’s first major treaty ports imposed by foreign powers.

First Opium War: A war fought between Qing China and Britain from 1839 to 1842 over the opium trade and diplomatic disputes. The defining conflict of Daoguang’s reign ended in a major Qing defeat.
Lin Zexu: A Qing official who led the campaign against opium at Canton in 1839 and destroyed confiscated stocks. Daoguang appointed him to suppress the opium trade, prompting a confrontation with Britain.
Jiaqing Emperor: The seventh Qing emperor, who ruled from 1796 to 1820 and was Daoguang’s father. Daoguang inherited the throne at Jiaqing’s death in 1820.
Charles Elliot: A British naval officer and diplomat who served as chief superintendent of British trade in China during the First Opium War. His negotiations with Lin Zexu over surrendered opium preceded hostilities.
