Darius the Great

Darius I ruled the Achaemenid Empire from 522 to 486 BCE, expanding its territory and reorganizing its administration, taxation, and infrastructure.

Achaemenid Empire: The ancient Persian empire founded by Cyrus the Great and ruled by the Achaemenid dynasty. Darius consolidated this empire into a more centrally organized imperial system.
Satrap: A governor responsible for administering a province in several ancient empires, especially the Achaemenid Empire. Satraps governed provinces within the administrative structure associated with Darius’s reforms.
Cyrus the Great: The founder of the Achaemenid Empire, who ruled Persia from about 559 to 530 BCE. Darius inherited an empire created by Cyrus and his successors.
Ionian Revolt: A rebellion of Greek cities in Asia Minor and Cyprus against Persian rule from 499 to 493 BCE. The revolt drew Darius into a conflict that helped precipitate his campaign against mainland Greece.
Herodotus: A Greek historian of the fifth century BCE whose Histories recount the Greco-Persian Wars and earlier events. Herodotus preserves a Greek narrative of Darius’s reign that differs in emphasis from Persian royal inscriptions.
Royal Road: An imperial road network connecting major centers of the Achaemenid Empire. Its routes helped Darius’s government move messages, officials, and goods across the empire.
Achaemenid taxation: The system by which the Achaemenid state assessed and collected tribute from its territories. Darius standardized provincial obligations to make imperial revenues more predictable.
Cambyses II: Achaemenid king who ruled from 530 to 522 BCE and conquered Egypt for the Persian Empire. Cambyses’s death in 522 BCE precipitated the disputed succession Darius exploited.
Battle of Marathon: A battle in 490 BCE in which an Athenian force defeated a Persian expeditionary army. The defeat marked a setback in Darius’s attempt to punish Athens for supporting the Ionian Revolt.
Xerxes I: Achaemenid king who succeeded Darius I and ruled from 486 to 465 BCE. Xerxes inherited Darius’s empire and continued the war against Greece that Darius had begun.
