Dark Energy Survey

The Dark Energy Survey was an international astronomical survey that mapped hundreds of millions of galaxies and thousands of supernovae to study cosmic expansion and the growth of structure.

Dark Energy Camera: A 570-megapixel wide-field camera built for the Víctor M. Blanco Telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. It collected the survey’s images across the southern sky.
Cosmological redshift: The stretching of light to longer wavelengths as the universe expands. DES redshifts linked observed galaxies to cosmic distance and time.
Víctor M. Blanco Telescope: A 4-meter optical telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. DES mounted its camera on this telescope for five observing seasons.
Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Cosmological measurements from the first three years of Dark Energy Survey observations. These results combined multiple probes to test the standard cosmological model.
Kilo-Degree Survey: A European optical and near-infrared survey designed to map weak gravitational lensing over large areas of sky. KiDS measured similar lensing signals with a different footprint and observing program.
Weak gravitational lensing: The subtle distortion of distant galaxy shapes by foreground matter’s gravitational field. DES used these distortions to map matter and test structure growth.
Cosmic expansion: The increase in distances between unbound regions of the universe over time. Measuring its history was a central aim of the survey.
Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory: An astronomical observatory in Chile’s Coquimbo Region, operated by the National Science Foundation’s NOIRLab. Its dark southern skies hosted DES observations.
Lambda-CDM model: The standard cosmological model, with cold dark matter and a cosmological constant. DES tested this model’s predictions for expansion and structure growth.
Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program: A wide-field imaging survey conducted with the Hyper Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. HSC provided independent imaging and lensing measurements for cosmological comparisons.
