Darkroom

A light-controlled workspace used to process photographic film and make prints from negatives. Its safelights and chemical baths allow light-sensitive materials to be handled without unwanted exposure.

Black-and-white film processing: The chemical development, stopping, fixing, washing, and drying of exposed black-and-white photographic film. These steps turn an exposed strip into a stable negative in the darkroom.
Silver halide: A light-sensitive silver compound used in traditional photographic emulsions. Silver halide crystals record exposure in film and photographic paper.
Color darkroom printing: The production of color photographs by exposing and chemically processing color-sensitive photographic paper. Color paper requires controlled filtration, temperature, and processing chemistry.
Digital photography: Photography that captures and processes images using electronic sensors and digital data. It replaces film chemistry and paper development with electronic capture and editing.
Photographic printing: The process of exposing photosensitive paper to an image and chemically developing it into a photograph. An enlarger projects a negative onto paper for this darkroom process.
Photographic emulsion: A light-sensitive layer of silver halide crystals suspended in gelatin or another binder. This coating is the material darkroom chemicals act upon.
Contact printing: A photographic printing method that exposes paper directly beneath a negative or other transparent image. It makes prints without an enlarger, often at the negative's original size.
Chromogenic color print: A color photographic print made through dye-forming chemical reactions in light-sensitive paper. Its multilayer color chemistry differs from traditional black-and-white printing.
Photographic enlarger: An optical device that projects a negative onto photographic paper at a chosen scale. It controls image size, focus, and exposure during printmaking.
Latent image: An invisible image formed in a photographic emulsion by exposure to light. Development amplifies this hidden record into a visible image.
