David Farragut

David Farragut (1801–1870) was a U.S. Navy admiral who commanded Union forces in major Civil War victories, including the capture of New Orleans and the Battle of Mobile Bay.

Battle of Mobile Bay: An 1864 Union naval victory that sealed the entrance to Mobile Bay, Alabama. Farragut led the fleet through Confederate defenses, reportedly ordering it onward after a ship struck a mine.
Union blockade: The Union naval campaign to restrict Confederate trade and access to seaports during the Civil War. Farragut’s Gulf operations helped enforce the blockade and capture major ports.
Gideon Welles: U.S. secretary of the navy from 1861 to 1869, responsible for directing the Union Navy during the Civil War. Welles helped expand and direct the service in which Farragut commanded.
