David Stirling

David Stirling (1915–1990) was a Scottish Army officer who founded the Special Air Service (SAS) during the Second World War and helped shape its early desert operations.

Special Air Service: The British Army special forces unit founded in 1941 for raids and reconnaissance behind enemy lines. Stirling proposed and led the unit whose formation defined his wartime career.
Operation Squatter: A failed SAS parachute raid on German airfields in Libya on the night of 16–17 November 1941. The disastrous first mission prompted Stirling to rethink how his force reached its targets.
Paddy Mayne: An Irish officer who commanded the SAS after Stirling’s capture and became one of its most prominent wartime leaders. Mayne sustained the regiment’s operations after Stirling was removed from command.
Operation Bigamy: A 1942 SAS plan to attack Axis airfields in Benghazi that was abandoned after the force was compromised. The failed operation preceded Stirling’s capture during the retreat from North Africa.
