David Vetter

David Vetter (1971–1984) was an American boy with severe combined immunodeficiency who spent most of his life in sterile isolation, becoming known as the “bubble boy.”

Severe combined immunodeficiency: A group of inherited disorders in which T-cell function is severely impaired, usually disrupting other immune defenses. Vetter’s condition left him unable to mount normal defenses against infections.
SCID newborn screening: Newborn testing that detects severe combined immunodeficiency before serious infections develop. Routine early detection came later; Vetter’s diagnosis followed a family history of the disorder.

David Vetter’s bone marrow transplant: A 1983 transplant attempt that used marrow from David Vetter’s sister, Katherine. This treatment ended his life in isolation but led to a fatal Epstein–Barr virus infection.
