Dawit II

Dawit II, also known as Lebna Dengel, was emperor of Ethiopia from 1508 to 1540. His reign faced Portuguese intervention and the devastating invasion led by Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi.

Ethiopian–Adal War: A sixteenth-century conflict between the Christian Ethiopian Empire and the Muslim Sultanate of Adal. Its opening Adal offensives forced Dawit from the throne’s usual centers of power.
Solomonic dynasty: A dynasty that ruled Ethiopia for much of its imperial history, claiming descent from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Dawit’s emperorship belonged to this dynasty’s restoration and hereditary claims.
Gälawdewos: Emperor of Ethiopia from 1540 to 1559 and son of Dawit II. He inherited the empire and continued resistance after Dawit’s death.

Na'od: Emperor of Ethiopia from 1494 to 1508 and father of Dawit II. Dawit succeeded his father while still a child.
Seble Wongel: An Ethiopian empress and wife of Dawit II who played a significant role during the Adal invasion. She escaped capture and helped sustain the dynasty’s resistance after Dawit’s defeat.
Ethiopian–Portuguese expedition: A Portuguese military expedition that reached Ethiopia in 1541 to support the Ethiopian struggle against Adal. The aid Dawit had sought became a decisive factor only after his reign ended.
Battle of Shimbra Kure: A 1529 battle in which Adal forces under Ahmad ibn Ibrahim defeated an Ethiopian army. The defeat marked a turning point in the war during Dawit’s reign.
Ethiopian regency: A period of rule by guardians or officials on behalf of a child or incapacitated Ethiopian monarch. Dawit’s youth left senior court figures to exercise power during his early reign.
