Dayak people

Dayak is an umbrella name for numerous Indigenous peoples of Borneo, especially those historically associated with the island’s interior. The peoples grouped under it have distinct languages, histories, and cultural traditions.

Iban people: An Indigenous people of Borneo, with communities in Sarawak, Brunei, and Indonesian Kalimantan. The Iban are among the largest peoples commonly included under the Dayak umbrella.
Dayak etymology: The study of the origin and historical development of the word “Dayak.” The label’s history helps explain why it does not name one unified people.
Customary land rights: Rights to land and resources grounded in a community’s customary laws and traditions. Dayak claims often concern ancestral territories that overlap with state concessions and development projects.

James Brooke: A British adventurer who became the first White Rajah of Sarawak in 1841. Brooke-era colonial accounts helped circulate broad classifications of Borneo’s peoples.
Indigenous peoples of Indonesia: Communities in Indonesia with distinct identities and customary relationships to ancestral lands. Dayak peoples are part of Indonesia’s wider landscape of Indigenous rights and recognition.
Dayak identity: A collective identity adopted and negotiated by diverse Indigenous communities in Borneo. The shared label can support solidarity while leaving room for distinct local identities.
Kayan people: An Indigenous people of central Borneo, with communities along major river systems in Sarawak and Kalimantan. Kayan communities share regional ties with other Dayak peoples but have their own identity.
Dutch East Indies: The Dutch colonial state that governed much of the Indonesian archipelago until the mid-twentieth century. Dutch rule shaped records and administrative categories applied to Indigenous communities in Kalimantan.
