Dayan Khan

Dayan Khan was a Mongol khagan of the Northern Yuan dynasty who reunified much of Mongolia in the late 15th and early 16th centuries.

Northern Yuan dynasty: The Mongol-led dynasty that ruled from the Mongolian Plateau after the Yuan dynasty lost China in 1368. Dayan Khan restored authority to this dynasty’s Mongol heartland.
Six tumens: The six major Mongol administrative and military groupings associated with Dayan Khan’s reorganization. Their arrangement gave his reunified realm a lasting political structure.
Chinggis Khan: The founder of the Mongol Empire and ancestor of the Mongol ruling house. Descent from Chinggis Khan underpinned Dayan Khan’s claim to khaganate.
Mongolia: A region of East and Central Asia encompassing the Mongolian Plateau and surrounding territories. His campaigns reunified much of this region under Mongol leadership.
Manduul Khan: A Mongol khagan who ruled in the late fifteenth century before Dayan Khan. His death left a succession crisis that helped enable Dayan Khan’s rise.
Tümed: A Mongol group that became a major power in the western Mongolian Plateau. Its incorporation shows how Dayan Khan extended authority beyond his initial base.
Gersendze Huangtaiji: A son of Dayan Khan traditionally regarded as an ancestor of the Khalkha Mongol ruling houses. His descendants carried Dayan Khan’s dynastic legacy into later Khalkha politics.
Mongolian nobility: The hereditary ruling class that governed Mongol communities and regional polities. His division of power strengthened princely branches that shaped later Mongol rule.
Mandukhai Khatun: A Mongol queen who governed as regent and helped secure Dayan Khan’s position. She backed the young khagan and led campaigns that strengthened his rule.
Khalkha: A major Mongol group that later formed the core population of modern Mongolia. The Khalkha tumens were among the eastern groups organized under his rule.
