DDT

DDT is a synthetic organochlorine insecticide that persists in the environment and accumulates in food webs. Its ecological harms led many countries to restrict or ban its use.

Organochlorine compounds: Organic compounds containing carbon–chlorine bonds, including many pesticides and industrial chemicals. DDT belongs to this chemical family, whose stable bonds help explain its environmental persistence.
Othmar Zeidler: An Austrian chemist who first synthesized DDT in 1874. Zeidler made DDT decades before its insecticidal properties were recognized.
Silent Spring: Rachel Carson’s 1962 book documenting the ecological harms of pesticides, especially DDT. Carson’s account brought DDT’s effects on birds and ecosystems to a broad public.
Pyrethroids: Synthetic insecticides modeled on pyrethrins, compounds found in chrysanthemum flowers. Pyrethroids became alternatives to DDT in many vector-control and agricultural settings.
Bioaccumulation: The buildup of a substance in an organism when uptake exceeds elimination. DDT accumulates in organisms because it is fat-soluble and breaks down slowly.
Paul Hermann Müller: A Swiss chemist who discovered DDT’s insecticidal action and received the 1948 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Müller’s 1939 discovery turned DDT into a practical insecticide.
Rachel Carson: An American marine biologist and writer whose work helped launch the modern environmental movement. Carson synthesized evidence about DDT and challenged routine pesticide use.
Organophosphate insecticides: Insecticides that disrupt nerve signaling by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase. They offer a different chemical mode of action, though many have substantial acute toxicity.
Biomagnification: The increase in a contaminant’s concentration at successively higher levels of a food chain. DDT concentrations rose in predators that ate contaminated prey.
Second World War: A global conflict fought from 1939 to 1945 between the Allied and Axis powers. Military campaigns used DDT to control lice and insect-borne disease.
