A philosophical treatise Cicero wrote in 44 BCE on moral duties, honorable conduct, and practical life. It presents ethical guidance through a Roman statesman’s perspective.

Roman Republic: The period of Roman government before the establishment of the Roman Empire, conventionally dated 509–27 BCE. The work’s account of civic duty reflects the political institutions and ideals of republican Rome.
Renaissance: A period of renewed engagement with classical learning and artistic innovation in Europe, beginning in the fourteenth century. The work’s revival in Renaissance schools helped transmit classical ethical thought.
Consequentialism: An ethical family of theories that judges actions by the value of their consequences. Cicero rejects treating beneficial outcomes as sufficient justification when conduct violates justice.
