Death

Death is the irreversible cessation of the biological functions that sustain an organism. In humans, medical and legal criteria determine when death is declared.

Brain death: The permanent cessation of all functions of the entire brain, including the brainstem, under accepted medical criteria. It is one medical criterion for declaring death, distinct from cardiac arrest.
Life: The condition of organisms that maintain themselves through organized biological processes. Death marks the irreversible end of the integrated processes associated with life.
Organ donation: The donation of organs or tissues for transplantation or research. Donation protocols depend on valid death determination and rules governing consent.

Cell death: The irreversible loss of viability in an individual cell. An organism’s death involves widespread, irreversible cellular failure, though cells do not all die simultaneously.
Homeostasis: The regulation of internal conditions within ranges compatible with biological function. Failure of homeostatic regulation can contribute to irreversible organismal collapse.
