Debye–Hückel theory

Debye–Hückel theory estimates how electrostatic interactions reduce ionic activities in dilute electrolyte solutions, relating activity coefficients to ionic charge and solution ionic strength.

Ionic atmosphere: The nonuniform cloud of surrounding ions whose net charge is opposite to that of a chosen ion. This surrounding charge cloud produces the electrostatic correction at the heart of the theory.
Chemical potential: A thermodynamic quantity describing how a system's free energy changes when the amount of a component changes. Activity enters chemical potential as the correction to ideal-solution composition.
Solubility product: The equilibrium constant for dissolution of a sparingly soluble ionic solid, expressed through dissolved-ion activities. Activity corrections can change solubility estimates derived from measured ion concentrations.
Extended Debye–Hückel equation: A correction to the limiting law that accounts approximately for finite ion size at higher ionic strength. It extends the basic prediction but remains approximate as solutions become more concentrated.
Peter Debye: A Dutch-American physicist whose work included molecular structure, dipole moments, and electrolyte theory. He developed the theory with Erich Hückel.
Debye length: A characteristic distance over which mobile charges screen an electrostatic field in a medium. It measures the spatial range of the ionic screening assumed in the theory.
Electrostatic potential: Potential energy per unit charge at a point in an electric field. The ionic atmosphere changes this potential around each dissolved ion.
Acid dissociation constant: An equilibrium constant describing the dissociation of an acid in a specified solvent and standard state. Using activities helps distinguish thermodynamic constants from concentration-dependent apparent values.
Davies equation: An empirical expression for ionic activity coefficients that extends approximate predictions to moderately concentrated aqueous solutions. It is often used where the limiting law's low-concentration assumption is too restrictive.
Erich Hückel: A German physical chemist known for work on electrolytes, molecular orbitals, and aromatic compounds. His collaboration with Peter Debye produced the theory's account of ionic atmospheres.
