Deccan Sultanates

The Deccan Sultanates were five Muslim-ruled kingdoms—Ahmadnagar, Bijapur, Berar, Bidar, and Golconda—that emerged from the Bahmani Sultanate and flourished from the late 15th to 17th centuries.

Bahmani Sultanate: A Persianate Muslim kingdom that ruled much of the Deccan from 1347 until its authority fragmented in the late 15th century. Its weakening central government enabled the five successor kingdoms to emerge.
Battle of Talikota: A 1565 battle in which a coalition of Deccan Sultanates defeated the Vijayanagara Empire near Talikota. The coalition showed that rival sultanates could unite against a common adversary.
Nizam Shahi dynasty: The dynasty that ruled the Ahmadnagar Sultanate from its foundation in 1490 until Mughal annexation in 1636. It governed Ahmadnagar, the westernmost of the five successor states.
Gol Gumbaz: The monumental mausoleum of Bijapur ruler Mohammed Adil Shah, completed in the 17th century. Its vast dome embodies the architectural ambition of the Bijapur court.
Mahmud Gawan: A Persian-born statesman who served as chief minister of the Bahmani Sultanate in the 15th century. His reforms strengthened the court but deepened conflicts among the factions that later divided the sultanate.
Vijayanagara Empire: A South Indian empire founded in 1336 that competed with Deccan powers until its defeat at Talikota in 1565. Its long rivalry with the sultanates shaped campaigns, alliances, and frontier politics.
Adil Shahi dynasty: The dynasty that ruled the Bijapur Sultanate from 1490 until its conquest by the Mughals in 1686. Its rulers shaped Bijapur's political and architectural prominence.
Charminar: A four-minareted monument in Hyderabad, commissioned by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1591. It stands as a landmark of the Qutb Shahi capital founded during the sultanates' era.
Ahmadnagar Sultanate: A Deccan kingdom founded by the Nizam Shahi dynasty in 1490, centered on Ahmadnagar. It was one of the five successor states and a major rival of Mughal expansion.
Mughal conquest of the Deccan: The Mughal Empire's campaigns to bring the Deccan kingdoms under imperial rule, culminating in the annexations of Bijapur and Golconda in 1686–1687. Mughal expansion ended the independent rule of the major sultanates.
