Decimal system

The decimal system is a positional numeral system with base 10. Each digit’s value depends on its position, which represents a power of ten.

Place value: A numeral system’s rule that a digit’s value depends on its position. Each position in a decimal numeral represents a different power of ten.
Numeral system: A notation for representing numbers with symbols and rules. The decimal system is one positional member of this broader family.
Hindu–Arabic numeral system: The positional numeral system using ten digits that developed in India and spread through Arabic scholarship. Its decimal place-value notation is the historical framework used today.
Decimal fraction: A fraction whose denominator is a power of ten, such as 37/100. Decimal places encode these fractions directly through powers of ten.
Binary numeral system: A positional numeral system with base two and digits zero and one. It uses the same place-value principle but powers of two instead of ten.
Powers of ten: Integer powers of ten are numbers formed by multiplying or dividing ten repeatedly. Decimal places correspond to successive positive or negative powers of ten.
Digit: A symbol used to write numbers within a numeral system. Decimal numerals use ten digit values, from zero through nine.
Brahmi numerals: Ancient Indian numeral symbols that contributed to the development of modern digits. Their evolving forms helped supply the symbols later used in decimal notation.
Long division: An algorithm for dividing numbers by repeatedly finding quotient digits and remainders. It produces decimal digits when a division does not end in whole numbers.
Hexadecimal: A positional numeral system with base sixteen, using digits zero through nine and letters A through F. Its compact representation contrasts with decimal notation and is common in computing.
