Tanzimat: A program of Ottoman reforms from 1839 to 1876 that reorganized administration, law, taxation, and military service. Its decrees translated modernization into legal and administrative changes across the empire.
Treaty of Karlowitz: The 1699 peace settlement in which the Ottoman Empire ceded major territories in Central Europe to the Habsburgs and their allies. Its territorial concessions are often treated as a turning point in the empire’s changing fortunes.
Selim III: Ottoman sultan from 1789 to 1807 who introduced the Nizam-ı Cedid reform program. His reforms made an early, forceful attempt to remake the Ottoman military and state.

Mahmud II: Ottoman sultan from 1808 to 1839 who centralized authority and abolished the Janissary corps in 1826. His reign cleared institutional obstacles to later military and administrative reforms.
Balkan Wars: Two wars in 1912–1913 that cost the Ottoman Empire most of its remaining European territory. These defeats sharply reduced the empire’s territory and intensified its search for survival.
